News Frontliner Web Desk, 13 May 2019: In a sensational recovery the West Bengal police yesterday nabbed two persons at Asansol railway station and recovered Rs 1 crore from them. Purulia Lok Sabha seat which went into poll yesterday is adjacent to Asansol.
One of the two persons arrested claimed that the money has been sent by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to be used during the last two phases of Lok Sabha elections in Bengal, news agency ANI reported citing the police.
Asansol Police sources told ANI that, “We had received a secret notice on Sunday evening saying that some people are carrying cash and reaching Asansol from Delhi. Based on the tipoff, our officials was put on high alert.”
Movements of two persons with a big blue bag at platform number 5 of Asansol Railway station, made the special team of Asansol police suspicious. They were intercepted by the police and on being unable to deliver a viable answer about where they are going and from where they are coming, the police checked their bag only to find Rs 1 crore in cash.
One of the accused identified as Gautam Chattopadhyay is a resident of North 24 Parganas and himself disclosed that he is the personal secretary of BJP state president Dilip Ghosh. The other accused Laxmikant Shaw is a resident of Delhi.
Police source reveals that the money was accrued from a ill-famous Coal mafia residing in Purulia; who have been associated with coal pilferage in West Bardhaman, Bankura and Birbhum. He is said to have close contact with ‘Yuvaraj’ of Bengal and several high-ranked police officials.
Eight seats of West Bengal voted in the sixth phase on May 12.
Polling for remaining seats will take place on May 19 in the seventh phase and counting to be held on 23rd May. From interrogation, police came to know that under most likelihood the money was supposed to be used in the last phase of Lok Sabha poll in Kolkata.
