News Frontliner Web Desk, 25 February 2019: Australia pulled of a sensational win against India in the first T20 International at Vizag on Sunday, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
An important and timely half-century by Glann Maxwell played a huge role in crossing a seemingly paltry total of 127, which the hosts put up batting first, loosing toss on a tricky wicket. Opener D’Arcy Short and wicketkeeper-batsman Peter Handscomb also clinched in with by scoring 37 and 13 runs respectively to steady the innings, after Australia lost four of their batsman for a single-digit score.
Maxwell, who made 56, put together 84 runs with D’Arcy Short for the third wicket to put Australia on course before Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah hit back with three wickets.
Bumrah also dismissed debutant Peter Handscomb, caught behind for 13 and then bowled Coulter-Nile on the last ball of the 19th over to keep the game alive for India.
However, Jhye Richardson and Cummins, both not out on seven runs each, kept their cool in the final over against Umesh Yadav to steer the Aussies pass India’s total of 127.
But the day belonged to Coulter Nile who dismissed three Indian batsman by giving away just 26 in his four overs, receiving the man of the match award.
Indian batsman KL Rahul, who returned to the side after a suspension over sexist comments during a controversial TV chat show appearance with Hardik Pandya, played a blistering knock and made 50 off just 36 balls.
Rahul along with skipper Virat Kohli, made 55 run in a second wicket stand to give India a brisk start but the hosts lost momentum after losing three quick wickets. Kohli scored 24 runs.
Adam Zampa got Kohli’s prized scalp with his leg spin and Coulter Nile claimed the wicket of Rahul to check India on a tricky pitch.
Veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni made an unbeaten 29 and stedied the Indian innings.
The second match is in Bangalore on Wednesday.
